Q&A: Transmission Line Inspection Using Robotics

By Phill Feltham

A: Hydro-Québec’s power transmission system, the most extensive in North America, covers close to 34,000 km. Similar to many power utilities, we need thorough infrastructure inspections to ensure system reliability, availability, and performance. Therefore, we have, developed robotic tools to work in places that are often hard to get to and to provide operators with diagnostic tools to assist them in their decision-making. Hydro-Québec has developed a robot, named LineScout, to inspect live transmission lines.

Q: Can you explain the robot’s applications and the benefits to customers?
