Large power transformers are among the most expensive and least replaceable assets in any electrical system. A single unit can cost several million dollars, weigh hundreds of tons, and require a year or more to manufacture and deliver. When a transformer fails unexpectedly, the consequences include extended outages, emergency procurement costs, environmental cleanup, and in some cases fire. Continuous monitoring, combined with reliable communications, gives utilities the visibility they need to prevent those failures.
Why Online Monitoring Matters
Traditional transformer maintenance relied on periodic testing: an oil sample every six or twelve months, an offline electrical test during a scheduled outage, and routine visual inspection. The problem is that many failure modes develop faster than those intervals. A fault that begins generating gas shortly after a sample is taken may reach a critical stage before the next one.
Online monitoring closes that gap. Sensors mounted on the transformer track its condition continuously and report changes as they happen, allowing operators to reduce load, schedule an inspection, or remove the unit from service before a minor problem becomes a catastrophic one.
