Canadian government showcases environmentally friendly Smart Grid projects

In recent years, the Federal Government of Canada has collaborated with electric utilities and other industry organizations to digitize the country’s power grid with clean energy technology. Three of these projects, currently works in progress, are a collaboration between electric utilities in several provinces, and Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), a branch of Canada’s federal government.
Two of these projects include the Hydro-Québec Smart Zone in Boucherville, Québec, and the BC Hydro Storage project. NRCan completed the third project in partnership with Electro-Federation Canada (ElectroFed) in 2012 to introduce Smart Grid standards nationwide. Electro-Fed, a Canadian power industry association, has a mandate to move “electrical, electronics and telecommunications markets forward in Canada”.
Electricity Today Magazine spoke with representatives from Natural Resources Canada who provided a breakdown of each of the three current projects.
