ENERGY TRADE IN NORTH AMERICA
New Energy Efficiency Report Released
By Tania Henvey
In late December, the North American Energy Working Group (NAEWG), which is made up of senior officials from Canada, the US and Mexico, released a third report, North America-Regulation of International Electricity Trade, detailing energy standards in these three countries. This joint study, which is a reference tool for those in the industry, shows how each nation is attempting to expand its energy trade within North America.
"Our countries are interested in maintaining efficient electricity markets and in supporting a reliable electricity grid that functions well across our boundaries," said Canada's Natural Resources Minister Herb Dhaliwal. "By publishing this report, the (NAEWG) hopes to make it easier for companies to follow the regulatory requirements of each country."
The report involves federal regulations for international power lines and the authorization of electricity exports/imports on the continent, serving as a guide for all three countries. This enables them to create a system that can run smoothly.
One of the highlights of this third report was that Mexico had accepted new standards for energy efficiency. This means that all three countries will have the same requirements and testing procedures for refrigerators, freezers, electric motors and air conditioners before the end of April 2003.
The report reflects regulations as of December 2002. It demonstrates the benefits of a North American-wide standard of improved reliability in the transmission of energy and lower prices for consumers. ET
